During the academic year 1980-1981 we found a welcoming research group with exceptional working conditions in the University of Rochester : a computer Vax 780 and a raster screen of 256 colors. It was necessary to build a software ex-nihilo using this Raster . "Opengl" was not yet there, we decided to use only black and white colors to have 256 gradations of grey. It was also necessary to find processes of modellings, in absence of any system of capture.. We used drawings by hand, dolls, dinosaur skeletons, wooden models... Once the primitive shape was obtained, we enjoyed imagining any sorts of deformations of the 3D points coordinates : displacing, mixing, transforming with various formulas.
